Enlisted into North Carolina Infantry Regiment at 16...got sick, and ended up in Virginia. Sounds like after Gettysburg he got scared and switched sides.

The last Civil War widow died 12 years ago.

Granted, she was born in 1914, so her veteran husband was an old man when they married.

How much was her pension and what were her total government benefits during the course of her life?

From the article:

She received a monthly check of $73.13 from the Department of Veterans Affairs, which went towards expenses for the nursing home where she lived.

There was someone alive who’s parent fought in the civil war? Incredible

Our 10th president (John Tyler) has two living grandchildren. I think that's equally mind-blowing.

But it's still hard to believe that someone that witnessed the Lincoln assassination would also live long enough to see the age of television.

Well, I'm sure TV cured him of whatever wide-eyed childhood optimism he took away from the Fox Theater.

So that covered her living expenses for almost a whole day. How was the rest paid for?
