So I mentioned this in another thread a few days ago (which gave some great advice, thank you all for the advice!), but I got an upper respiratory infection/virus 2 weeks ago and a few days in I lost my voice. The infection is gone but I have never gotten my voice back.

Went to my ENT doctor (I had a deviated septum that was repaired by septoplasty last year) who said it was a fungal infection. Gave me Diflucan and Nystatin to clear it up. Called back on Friday and the nurse assistant agreed that my voice should be sounding better by now. I have been put on complete vocal rest over the weekend and see my ENT doctor again tomorrow.

From what she said, they'll be doing a more in depth look at the throat and vocal cords and taking images by camera. I guess it's a laryngoscopy which will hopefully give them a better idea of what's going on.

First of all, has anyone here had a laryngoscopy? Is it painful? I've had to regular endoscopy before and those don't really bother me but I'm sure this could be different.

Second, I am scared. I've lost my voice before but it's never stayed gone. My voice has come back to some extent but it's not my voice. My regular sound isn't there, heck I almost sound like some villain. I'm worried I'll never regain use of my voice again. It feels as though I've lost an arm or a leg.

If I never regain my voice I don't know what I'll do. I probably wouldn't be able to stay in the position that I love so much, it involves a fair amount of talking. I honestly don't know what I would do.

Has anyone else had this happen? Am I overreacting or does this sound like something very serious? Could it be lung cancer? Cancer doesn't really run in my family but I have given it a thought. I feel so powerless right now and it's a feeling I'm not used to.

Your boyfriend will be upset you won't put out for a few days, but I hope you both have a full recovery soon.

On a lighter note, in some ways I sound like an even worse Coach O. I could be a Coach O impersonator, lol.

You will probably be referred to a speech therapist. Good luck. Hope you heal quickly; no voice is no fun.

Happened to me. Took me a full 3 months to get back to normal. I did have a very deep and gravelly voice. No permanent damage.

Depends on what they find in the endoscopy. From what it sounds like you likely have muscle tension dysphonia which is very benign and can be treated with physical therapy (myofascial release) and speech therapy to teach you how to properly use your voice and intrinsic laryngeal muscles rather than the other muscles of your neck.

Voice rest is complete BS for someone like you unless you grossly traumatized your cords causing a lesion such as a hematoma by screaming for an extended period of time (professional singer performing nights in a row). Again, highly unlikely for you.

The endoscopy is not something to be scared/nervous about. It is a very tiny camera inserted either through your nose or mouth to look at your vocal cords. Uncomfortable but not painful, they'll give you some numbing medicine. Lasts a few minutes tops.
