It has had amazing staying power.

I miss the arcade, and two movie theaters.

And there was a D.H. Holmes in all of those (except Riverwalk).

Let’s not forget when Maison Blanche and Godchaux’s were in the mix .

Also dont confuse the Godchaux dept stores which were mainly in the NOLA area with the Goudchaux dept stores (with an extra “u” in the spelling ) which were mainly indigenous to the BR area .

The Slidell mall was the GOAT. I get sad every time I pass it.

The people want it back including me.

Acquistapace recently bought 2 of the anchor stores, one of which to operate under said name.

Hopefully that’s a shot in the arm… or more like a defibrillator.

Although not a mall, Elmwood shopping center stays packed as well.

Heck yes…. Especially because I thought the 2 levels were awesome. Used to park at the Dillard’s Men’s Store.

We always went to Esplanade over lakeside growing up. Esplanade was badass back in the day.

We would go to lakeside only to see and hold the puppies in the pet store

Maybe you are not ancient like me.. but im old enough to remember when Morten Andersen had exactly what you describe, a sports bar with giant goal posts right in the middle of Lakeside Mall.. the name might have been the Goalpost, or the Endzone, cant remember exactly but someone here will for sure know.. i feel like it was there for quite some time , not sure why it ultimately folded though .. maybe when he went to ATL ?

Champions.

They had a crazy 64 ounce gimmick drink that could put you out for the night.

We had an "American Pie" moment there. Four of us who had just came back from freshman year at different colleges were each having one of those drinks and by 2 am were embarking on what became a legendary road trip.

Thinking back on it, all of the New Orleans area malls were not only good but very good. To this day the one in New Orleans East may be the best one I ever went to anywhere. It had an ice skating rink in it! My mother used to store her two fur coats there in some climate-controlled storage place one of the stores had as a service. Can you imagine anything with amenities like that existing today?

I remember the fancy gift wrapping service at Dillard’s.

And layaway at Mervyn’s. I always used to think that the cashier really held my future garish patterned shirt and shorts under the counter the whole time.

Can’t remember which anchor stores, but I have vivid memories as a 6-8 year old trying to run up the angled outside walls.

I vividly remember these dark brick patterned floors and wood benches.

Also a Flame n Burger, and a Farrells ice cream shop .

And Lake Forest Plaza was the first mall in the New Orleans metro that had a Spencers Gifts.. the first by many, many years .

I was too young to drive during the heyday of the Esplanade.. but later, when going to Lakeside- my “secret” parking spot was to go into the parking garage between the movie theater and the Holmes/Dillards, drive up to the 2nd or 3rd level, park right next to the Dillards door and walk in there.. so yeah it took longer to walk to the actual mall, but at least you were walking thru the AC and the walk seemed shorter than parking a mile away outside.. I was a lot lazier then lol

Across the street? Absolutely. I remember K-B Toys in the mall, right around the corner from Jolly Time arcade, which was next to Dante’s pizza.

Im guessing a lot of this stuff has been covered here over the years- but man, there are certain very specific, niche things that only those of us who are ‘men of a certain age’, and by that i mean mostly Gen X- who grew up on the NOLA burbs would have any clue ever existed … i mentioned Toys by Roy earlier, but also Zack’s Frozen Yogurt, Storehouse, Augie’s Glass garden,, Greased Lightning water slide and , this is real inside baseball, but there was a meat pie place on the Bonnabel end of Vets called Mrs Wheatley’s meat pies that was so so good .. no one ever seems to recall that place though .

If they’d put a good sports bar in there right in the middle of the guys to hang out, they’d make a trillion dollars a year. Maybe more.

Before Champions it was called Spats in the 80s-- Thursday $5 Long Island Ice Teas in the big bowl glass was huge.

The people who own/ manage the Galleria also own/ manage Lakeside. The owner also has a couple of skyscrapers in NY city.

The Esplanade was a great mall but couldn't sustain as the area couldn't expand because of lake and swamps then the houses got older/ cheaper as the money moved to the Northshore.

Lakeside sustains because of location getting all the commuter traffic which is able to keep the anchor department stores.
