Labor vs Death

Why is it that we use death as an alternative to free labor. Why can't we use prisoners to do work that benefits society.
In Angola they have prisoners work to grow food and if im not mistaken they have a rodeo show the prisoners perform in.
I would prefer prisoners doing the labor vs freeloader illegal immigrants.

I would rather do something like that with welfare recipients than people who have done something bad enough to get the death sentence.

Because work camps can often lead to corruption. You find creative ways to tack on extra years to particularly skillful prisoners, and incentivise incarceration for the people that profit from it.
That being said, I do like the prison farm model, and it is important for prisons to not simply be used as a means of confinement but as a form of rehabilitation.

because those prisoners have rights- more than their victims. Thus, you can't force a prisoner to work. thats mean. thats racist.

We don't make a whole class of people work outside of prison- they are subsidized from the cradle to the grave. Their whole pre-prison lives are just training periods for the pen; it just wouldn't be fair to put that on them.

Nah, you're paying twice when you're employing illegals while also paying for prisoners to be kept alive. Pay once by putting the prisoners to work and cutting out the illegal labor.
