Thanks for the link. I already knew my rep was against it. She told me that the majority of the people in her district opposed this bill as well as the sheriff.
I'll wager that if she brought a bag of weed and the sheriff both to her district, the weed would be the more popular of the two.
Just more crap from crappy politicians.

If that's true, yea that's fine, but I have a problem believing that when something like 67+% of the state is in favor. However, what should the sheriff have to do with this unless she's getting bribes from him?

Well, I live in her district and I certainly don't believe she is right about that. I suppose the sheriff is still warning us all about evil weed and devil's lettuce so that he doesn't lose revenue from weed charges.
They have no care for the real will of the people.

In Mississippi we we got it on the ballot (Medical), overwhelmingly voted yes, and they still took it from the people.

Legal weed was going to be on the Ballot in Florida in 2022 but the state's republican AG filed a lawsuit against it and won on the argument that Florida's voters were too dumb and would get confused by thinking that they would be voting for federal legalization.
This same argument FAILED in Florida when they got medical marijuana on the ballot, but the court make up had changed since that decision and the new republican appointed judges felt they knew better than to allow the people to decide something for themselves. Blows my fricking mind that the republican party is hanging on to anti-legalization so hard. It goes against everything they claim to stand for.

The amount of corrupt power the sheriff's wield in this state is unbelievable. There was a literal (embarrassing) discussion today during the tax law debate over what the sheriff's tax cut should be from marijuana. One of our state reps was of the opinion that the sheriff's association should be able to dictate their own tax cut. Let that sink in for a minute.
Obviously it will never happen, but I'd love for someone, anyone to get on the mic and say, "I frankly don't care at all what the Sheriff's Association wants."

That is fitting because the Sheriffs are like the mafia in Louisiana. Many of the politicians that are against legalization have family members on DA and/or Sheriff payrolls.
The rep in Prairieville is Tony Bacula. He was "Chief Deputy" at the Sheriffs office. He voted no.

During Tuesday's floor debate, Rep. Ted James, D-Baton Rouge, pointed out sheriffs may lose money if fewer people are jailed because marijuana is legal.
Rep. Bryan Fontonot, R-Thibodaux, urged his colleagues on the House floor to vote against the bill, saying he thought experts should study how to divide up the tax revenue before approving the prospect to collect it.
Did someone seriously say or imply that less people in jail for marijuana was a negative?

I mean, how can you approve a tax if you aren't guaranteed a cut of it?
Posted on 5/18/21 at 10:38 pm to BeepNode
The thing is they were. The bill they voted down gave 3 cents for every dollar of weed sold directly to law enforcement.
Posted on 5/18/21 at 10:42 pm to JohnnyKilroy
It's crazy that we have to give money to them in the first place, much less that 3% isn't enough.

It's all grift, Man! Read those bipartisan quotes. Has zero to do with what the people want. It's all about what's in it for them. Career politics.

Investigating and prosecuting rapes are murders are net financial drains on the criminal legal system. "Investigating and prosecuting" traffic tickets, marijuana possession, etc, are massive net financial boons for the criminal legal system.
LEOs, prosecutors, and judges, on average, do not want the money makers legalized. I wish it weren't that simple, but it is.

And while I don't have the energy to go watch the committee hearing to confirm, the wording of the article I just pulled makes it sound like Ted James was citing to that as a bias, not that he was actually making that argument:
quote:
During a committee hearing, Warren Montgomery, district attorney for St. Tammany and Washington parishes, cited multiple studies that reviewed the detrimental effects of legalized weed. During Tuesday's floor debate, Rep. Ted James, D-Baton Rouge, pointed out sheriffs may lose money if fewer people are jailed because marijuana is legal.

They're banking on the fact you and everyone else wont remember that at the ballot box. It will all be other red meat debate by then to entice you to vote straight party again. That's the game.

The person I just voted for a couple weeks ago (who barely won by the skin of her teeth) voted no.
Sending her an email tomorrow morning.
