If your kid does go pro, rec ball is the likelier path. On the off-chance that your kid is a freak athlete with the arm strength, foot speed, power, stamina, and character, who gets all the right breaks at just the right time, chances are he’ll rise up through the ranks of rec ball rather than being groomed on the travel ball circuit. Small towns breed professional athletes, and the reason seems to be that kids in small towns aren’t over-coached, over-organized, and over-specialized by the travel ball opportunities found in larger cities. Small town kids grow up playing lots of sports not getting burnt out playing the same one all year round.

This is an article from some guy who played college ball at Arkansas and now coaches his kids teams.

You should start suggesting or promoting activities other than sports

Tell your kid to be better.
Only winning is important, and mercy is for the weak.
Then talk loud enough to be heard from the other room, and tell him how he probably got it honestly from his mother, how the only thing she hustles for are trans fats and pain pills.
Then talk about how you wish you could go back 15 years, knowing what you know now.

My kid plays tournament baseball on a majors team, he is not the best on the team, but is a good kid and a pretty good player.
What will determine his baseball career has nothing to do with what he does prior to 12....nothing, zero. Every baseball person knows that success at the younger ages has everything to do with birthdays and development. If you are 5 foot 9 and 150 lb 12 year old, yes, you will dominate and you will be a good travel team. If you are a 5 foot 10 200 lb Junior with no speed, no arm, and cant hit the outside pitch...you will be a pretty good guard on the football team.
If he is coached by the right person as he gets older, not one decent high school coach will give a rats arse about his batting average in an 11U World Series in Pensacola.
You should let your kid play travel tourney ball if he loves it. Fear of being left behind is a great money maker for USSSA.
Lastly, the OP got screwed by a coach that panicked and picked up a few disheartened players from another team. The Baton Rouge tourney this weekend exploded with teams and assholes sometimes shuffle kids. Count your blessings OP.
Or, the OP and his wife are pains in the arse. Only the OP knows.

I’ve read that article before. And I can get some of the things he’s saying. I just know, from the experiences with my 2 boys, all kids are different. My 16 year old played tourney ball from 6-14 and is a Junior on the high school baseball team. My 12 year old played tourney ball from 6-11. My youngest got burnt out. My son in high school, you can’t give him enough time in the day to play baseball. I never forced my boys to play. To each his own.

Nice judge of what you think is correct dipshit. Read my last comment.

So go try out for another team.
At that age there are probably 50 other teams in 5 different classifications he can play on.
It’s not the end of the world. He’s only 6

Great article. I am not anti travel ball. As I stated, my kid absolutely loves it. But there are all kinds of other opportunities (non sports related) that are being missed because you cant put another thing on your plate.

Maybe he should try golf or soccer.
Or maybe he should play on a team that doesn't cut fricking 6 year olds trying to hit a ball off a fricking tee... Because they're fricking 6 and who gives a shite?

Well if he was 6, I’d understand your frustration with the OP post. But clearly, multiple times, he stated his son is 11(ELEVEN) years old.

You said if they dont play travel ball they are too far behind....that is not correct. Your later comment had nothing to do with that statement.
If a kid has interest, develops physically and has some decent tools he will play baseball thru high school with no problem whether he plays rec or travel.
Now, if your HS coach is an idiot, those bets are off. If you have a decent program, he will judge each kid on their own merits..not the logo on their bat bag.

Pretty sure Michael Jordan wasn’t even on his varsity team as a sophomore in high school. He went home and cried. Turned out to be the GOAT. If he wants it bad enough, this will motivate him. If he hates the politics of baseball, he’ll open his eyes and realize there are other things in the world just as satisfying. Either way, a lesson will be learned.
At least they did not make you pay all the tourney fees and other crap just to have him sit on the bench every weekend. That would have been worse.

And again, that is your opinion. That doesn’t make me a dumbass. I’ve seen some of the rec kids come out and tryout for the tournament teams. Say what you will, but, based on the coaching they have received, they are very far behind. It’s not an opinion. It’s based on what I’ve seen. I believe the coaching a kid gets before they are 12 is very important. And if you think you can take a 12 year old tournament kid that has only played on tournament teams, and put him head to head against a rec 12 year old, and it would be even relatively close, you, are the dumbass.

Mine played tourney ball for several years.. for a pretty good organization. Whomever made the team at tryouts, was on the team. At bigger tourneys, might bring in an outside kid which would result in someone on bench... but not cut.
Must be more to the story.

Well in that case if he’s 11 and he’s getting cut at that age then he’s clearly not good enough to be on that team.
Still doesn’t change the fact that he can’t find a AA or All Star REC team to play on.

If there were not a thousand other things for a kid to do besides chase a ball it fould be a problem.
