I hope the driver stopped and called 911.
Just because the kid could run away doesn't mean he wasn't severely injured and needed to go to the hospital. If the driver called 911, they could have an organized search for the kid.

He's lucky that other drive didn't run over him in the other lane. Kid probably has internal injuries that will show up later. The heavy winter coat definitely cushioned the impact.
