It might be close, but your comparison is the clear winner.

Of course you can. Getting mentions online and on TV has a monetary value.

If you can put a value on this, you’d be the richest man in the world. It only has value to nike when someone who hears or sees the ad buys the product.

Can you, or anybody else for that matter, predict how many people will respond to the ad with a purchase; or even track those who did?

You can’t put a price tag on fricking buzz, you can’t buy or sell buzz.

Actually you can - people sell likes, social media advertising, etc. all the time.

You know there are people who get paid to do this, right?

I know there are people who attempt to. I worked in it data management for quite a while, and It’s definitely not as unambiguous as you think it is.

Who said that? I know I didn't.

Just pointing out the gaps in your knowledge.

You're missing the point.

If you went to a marketing consultant and wanted to get X amount of views/likes/clicks/etc, you'd pay Y amount of dollars to get that publicity.

If you can quantify how many views/likes/clicks/etc Nike and its brand received because of this, you can put a value on it.

It's no different than Trump's incredible media buzz during the primaries and election cycle. He was discussed more than any other candidate, and even though it cost him very little, that buzz had a tremendous value.

Which is why it's important to separate neutral/positive exposure from negative exposure.

Nike getting mentioned on Fox News is probably negative exposure. Nike mentions on Twitter are probably neutral. etc.
