Meh, even those who do not "see combat" give up a lot compared to say a DMV worker or IRS bureaucrat. Of course, everybody has their own "why" for doing something. Their is a certain social cache to wearing a military uniform and the overall compensation is considered good by many who do it.
What is "combat?" The Pacific in WW2? Nam in 68. Pech River Valley in 09? Being rocketed multiple times a month while you're deployed to a small FOB? Being a gunner on a convoy in Iraq? (Every non combat arms troop was a gunner in Iraq from 03-08 if you ask them

i know a bunch of people from high school who are/were mechanics on an air force base in Missouri or something along those lines and they act like they took a bullet in Fallujah

It amazes me how many kids say their parents were Vietnam vets and claim to have been snipers and machine gunners over there. In my combat tour in Nam I never met a sniper and there were only 4 true machine gunners in a Marine platoon.
By the way, when I returned from Nam (2 Purple Hearts) the only people who thanked me were men who served in WWII.

The sentiment isn't lost.
Hero is used often in the world of everyone gets a trophy. I have two neighbors with yard signs celebrating their "Heroism" for being elementary school teachers. I get their chosen profession has a good cause but Hero is a stretch.
