Honest question…
Why wouldn’t some $15/hour employee just steal every box, sell them and make a shitload of money?

ood for those dudes. Pokemon isn't my cup of tea, but it's harmless.
Making a kid's toy inaccessible by scalping them? It's not "great" harm but it isn't harmless.
And pathetic.

There were no kids waiting on that beer.

Because it’s strictly forbidden and they’ll be fired from most stores.
However, in the Pokémon craze, several employees of various stores have been accused of tipping off their buddies on stocking and then clear them out and split the sales.
The Pokémon scalper videos pop up in my feed because I watch a lot of nerd stuff. So I see a lot of the drama in the hobby.

I believe there is a game of sorts that can be played, similar to magic: the gathering, but I think the main appeal is just collecting and flexing to your friends and socials about how much you’ve spent and how rare your collection is
Basically this. Many a card packet was bought back in the day looking for that holographic charizard.
Now the 1st generation of it goes between 50k to 400k depending on grading.

Wish I had a hobby
My kid sold a card for $900.
Now, the other 37,000 cards might be worth a nickel, but he's got a cache of cards with a good amount. I didn't believe him until we went to sell it.
He bought an oculus and I made him put the rest into savings.
