Chain yourself to the goal post and go on hunger strike

Everyone in the thread has already mentioned the main points, but no..you don't just have free reign to use a school's facilities.

1)Liability. This is the big one. If your kid broke a leg out there, on school property, you COULD (if you wanted to) sue. Not that YOU would, but in today's society you certainly could.

2)Condition. If it was open for you, it'd have to be open to everyone. Can you imagine if 50 people brought their families on the field every Saturday and Sunday? The wear and tear would certainly end up costing the school in the long run.

Yep. Your trespassing. If you or you kids call and break your leg, you can sue the school board.

Meh, it's probably not us or the OP that made it this way. It's the sue-happy shithead leeches in society that made it this way.

But, it IS a valid reason for why he can't use them at his own leisure.

Why didn't you just go hang out in the teachers lounge and grab a soft drink? Do you surf tigerdroppings on the principal's computer in his office?

If the cop politely informed you that you can't be on the field, then I don't see any issue at all.

Great story, at a public school in Baton Rouge, one Sunday afternoon the baseball coach showed up at the field to cut the grass. Two high school kids and a dad were out on the field throwing batting practice. These kids/dad were not on the baseball team for that public school, so the coach asked why they were out there on the field. The answer from the dad was, well these boys play at (a private school in the same area) but their coach said that their field was too wet to use for the day. Hmm, their field was too wet to use, so let's just go sneak onto the public school field. Nice logic.

I wonder if that dad is gonna help pitch in for some Quickdry when the school has to purchase more, or take part in any sod renovations when the time comes?

It's trespassing.

Public school facilities aren't public parks.

I submit that the school board should include the proper signage around the facilities to give notice. Especially in my local area, the schools use public park areas that surround their football fields. They charge to park during games. At any other time the parking lot is open and parking is free.

It's a public school that requires registration and records. Not a public field

most fields are open to public.

Unless they are locked or marked.
I know the elementary by my house is attached to a local recreation park and the fields are open unless it's in use for a sporting event.

I wouldn't be surprised if they did.

Do you people really not see the difference between an open field and a school building?

Locally the only signs I see are temporary for fertilization and other maintenance jobs. Schools around here also call about cars parked in their open parking lots. We can't tow cars because they are open. When we tell the school admin they can have the vehicles, they never do it because they have to make the call and know they will be held responsible if they are wrong.

So if the doors to the school are left unlock, does that make it ok?

This notion that "I pay taxes, I should be able to use the athletic facilities" is crazy. Do you really think that the goverment builds and upkeeps those fields? Have you ever heard of a booster club? What do you think the money made from gate admission and concessions goes to? Ever donate to a fundraiser put on by a team?

LSU is a public university. Let's all get together this weekend for a flag football game in Tiger Stadium. Maybe Les will hang out with us.

I get the liability thing, my only confusion was why they are okay with 30 kids climbing all over playground equipment at the elementary school on the weekends. Seems like they would lock that bad boy down to prevent injury. There is not even a fence around it
