Just how great was the Polio Vaccine?

At the time of the vaccine, roughly 500 Americans were dying of polio annually. That’s right, only 500
Better hygiene and sanitation already wiped polio out here
This!!

not saying it's not true, but that's really hard to believe. I had two aunts and an uncle get it. Only one of the three lived.

Please don't attempt to use actual facts here, the person to which you are responding has already made up her mind.

The greatest part about the vaccine, according to its creator Jonas Salk, was that there was NO government
involvement in its development and testing.

I don’t dispute the relatively low death numbers but the quite real fear was the crippling - not the mortality rate.

Paralytic poliomyelitis, "polio", held a reign of terror over this nation for decades. But unless you were born before 1955, polio may seem to be just another ephemeral disease that has been nonexistent for years.
Those born before 1955 remember having a great fear of this horrible disease which crippled thousands of once active, healthy children.
This disease had no cure and no identified causes, which made it all the more terrifying. People did everything that they had done in the past to prevent the spread of disease, such as quarantining areas, but these tactics never seemed to work.
Polio could not be contained. Many people did not have the money to care for a family member with polio.

If you want to see some head explode, just say "SV40" whenever someone claims vaccines can't alter human DNA.
The key to this is viruses can alter human DNA. There is growing evidence that SARS-CoV-2 has in some cases integrated into people's DNA. Whether it works in the way HIV remains to be determined.
One of the big differences between virus-based vaccines and mRNA vaccines is mRNA vaccines can't breach the cell wall. It is a false equivalency to compare the SV40 tainted Polio vaccine's ability to change DNA with mRNA vaccines which simply can't.

That sucks for him, but it’s anecdotal just like covid horror stories
Polio was not a “Major” issue in America during the vaccine effort
In the worst years you had 1,000 or so deaths and 5-10k cases of crippling
If you posted that as the covid numbers everyone e would say “that’s like .0000005%”
That's great, but if you had to have one or the other, you would pick covid. If you're not elderly and reasonably healthy without and major health conditions (this is not a small amount of people in America) there's no reason to even really worry about covid.

A couple of perspectives from first hand polio experience
there is considerable thought that indoor plumbing created more polio problems. the virus was naturally occurring and exposure to dirt tended to build up a generational resistance through mild exposures. in door plumbing tended to reduce the exposure resulting in lower resistance.
Every significant sized school might have 1-2 crippled children that was testament to the severity of the disease . Not uncommon to have a class mate drop out , not to return.
Modern communication was just evolving with television providing a larger view of the national condition. the view of lung machines was terrifying
The first round was live virus that had some risks but the med folks showed that it was truly advantageous. It was a shot in the arm administered at school. but was limited to one strain of polio. The second was dead virus administered orally with a sugar cube and covered the other strain also. I had both at 6 and 8th grades.
About the same time the small pox vaccine was delivered again at school. I still have the vaccine scar.
A lot of the research was done through March Of Dimes collections that were done at every school. The Jerry Lewis telethons were an offshoot of this
The US came together to fix the problem of polio
Fauci and the big pharmas and Brandon have polarized covid for the purpose of generating cash flows and control. There is no comparison to the polio response.
I own this opinion. My wife had polio and has worn the steel braces all her life.
