As organizers of a campaign to recall Mayor LaToya Cantrell fought last month to reduce the number of signatures they needed, the judge presiding over the case did not disclose that she herself had signed the public recall petition.

Orleans Parish Civil District Judge Jennifer Medley, who last week endorsed an unusual deal between recall organizers and Secretary of State Kyle Ardoin’s office to trim the recall threshold by 5,000 names, added her signature to the petition on Dec. 19, recall campaign records show.

Even before then, she gave recall organizers a series of favorable rulings. She rejected efforts by election officials to have the case tossed before testimony was heard. When recall leader Eileen Carter took the stand, Medley refused to allow election officials to question Carter on the number of signatures the organizers had collected.

Advocates and experts in judicial ethics agreed that Medley should have revealed her support for Cantrell’s ouster, but were divided on whether she violated any ethical rules or should have recused herself from the legal challenge.

Inside job. Skew the process. Classic move.

What if this was about a recall of the governor? Every single judge in the state would be in this mess.

She probably should have disclosed but she signed a settlement offer. She didn't make a ruling.

I guess since it's just Orleans Parish maybe they could bring in a judge from outside the parish to handle this.

What rule/ethics could have been broken?

Does a judge have to reveal who they voted for before ruling on a matter that involves an elected official?

Wasn’t it basically just a ministerial act? No real adjudicating to do just confirm accuracy?

LaToya being bullied again. John Georges isn’t going to allow it or a recall.

Name the “advocates and experts”. What is the specific ethical code they are split on?

Yeah I don’t see an issue. Judges are people too that deserve a voice/opinion.

Now one would hope a judge would check their opinions at the door and do their job objectively when the time comes, but nonetheless they’re still allowed to be human and have opinions.

Good. Don't ruin the recall local media. Focus on the disaster that is the DAs office.
