Why do New Orleans folk identify themselves as the high school they went to rather than the college? I've always found that strange. New Orleans seems to be the only place that really does that.
If someone asked me "what school did you go to" i would say LSU, not name the high school. Just curious?

Brother Martin's teacher of the year was a Blue Jay.
So, Brother Martin hired a competent young teacher who is flourishing in the environment provided at the school. Good for them. Is there a point to your post?
ETA: any of you Blue Jays know a Dr. Cyril Lagvanic? He is an interesting fellow.

probably because the big Catholic schools and some of the public schools have all been rivals for so long without growth in new schools...
for example Rummel means Metairie, Shaw means the West Bank, Bonnabel means Kenner, John Curtis means football, St. Aug means black NOLA, Ben Franklin means nerds, artsy types, potheads in NOLA, Chalmette means shrimp boots, etc.
Say a school and you know what type of kids go there for the most part
for colleges local kids are going to LSU or UNO if they don't want to leave home... Tulane is in their heads as "not local"

Almost always when people ask me what school I went to in New Orleans they expect me to say high school. I have said LSU a few times, and they tell me that they expected me to tell them the high school.
I think it in part has to do with the prominence of private and Catholic schools in the greater New Orleans area. Because of the crappy public education pretty much the entire middle class and up sends their children to some kind of private school. There are few good public options, with Franklin being one of the few exceptions.
Each of these private schools has a different reputation and perception about the culture there. Telling people which high school you went to supposedly says something about your background. Maybe a general idea of what neighborhoods you might be from, or what kind of values your parents might have had.
When I tell people that I went to Jesuit people may assume that I came from a decently well off conservative family that places value on education because of the reputation of the school. Also, although certainly not everyone with whom I graduated was a genius there is a certain baseline expectation of my personal intelligence. There are also peripheral associations such as Jesuit students tending to be a little conceited, weird, and people do love to call us gay.
These are the perceptions at least.

Fr Fitzgerald was the best thing about Jesuit.

Pretty much. It's basically a way for people to judge your social standing very quickly. In uptown or old metairie if you don't say you went to Newman, Country Day, Sacred Heart, McGehee or St Martin's people assume you're not one of the chosen ones lol.
Jesuit is sort of in a gray area I think. A lot of socially prominent families send their kids there, but it's so large that just saying you went to Jesuit doesn't say much about your background (but it also doesn't eliminate you automatically in their eyes either)..... Jesuit gets students from all over. Some working class, a lot of middle class and some old line money as well.
But yeah, it's just a BS way to draw a snap judgement about someone.
