I had the pleasure of meeting him years ago. I highly recommend reading his book. I think it was called When Hell Was In Session.

Please bump the thread with your review. I may buy as well

Its a great book.

In 6th grade we had to do a report on our personal heroes. I did mine on Admiral Denton and wrote him a letter. He wrote me back immediately. He was an outstanding American.

A following sea gives you additional thrust through the water, similar to a tail wind on an aircraft, but its also good for seasickness because it can make the back end of a poorly designed boat corkscrew. Interestingly the 747SP had this same problem with tailwinds.

I think you missed the point....

I would love to read his book. Just his Wikipedia page makes me realize how much of a pussy I am when compared to men like him. LINK

Denton was put in the "Hanoi Hilton" and the "Zoo" prison and prison camp and "Little Vegas" and "Alcatraz" prisons. In "Alcatraz", he became part of a group of American POWs known as the "Alcatraz Gang". The group consisted of James Mulligan, George Thomas Coker, George McKnight, James Stockdale, Harry Jenkins, Sam Johnson, Howard Rutledge, Robert Shumaker, Ronald Storz, and Nels Tanner. They were put in "Alcatraz" and solitary confinement to separate them from other POWs because their strong resistance led other POWs in resisting their captors. "Alcatraz" was a special facility in a courtyard behind the North Vietnamese Ministry of National Defense, located about one mile away from Hoa Lo Prison. Each of the American POWs spent day and night in windowless 3-by-9-foot (0.91 m × 2.74 m) cells mostly in irons.

My grandfather's best friend was a Vietnam POW for 7 years.
He told me after his friend would finish a meal, he would lick his plate clean at the table (obviously he was forced to do so as a POW). He finally stopped licking it at the table, and would excuse himself to the kitchen and lick it clean in privacy.

My grandfather said there were several odd habits he would do.

I was thinking about that too. 3x9 is hardly any room and to spend that while in chains in the dark for months, no way I make it.

I attended a lecture given by Jeremiah Denton at Loyola University in the early '90s. He briefly addressed his POW years, but the main focus of his presentation was on (then) current national security/defense and serving America through volunteerism and/or military service to improve our society.

During the Q&A phase, some jerkoff went into a rambling political statement, vaguely disguised as a question. After about 30 seconds of rhetoric, the person made a snarky remark about "58,000 wasted American lives in Vietnam." Denton then interrupted and asked, "What about the 129? (or whatever the current official KIA talley was at that time) The speaker was confused, and Denton said, "Don't forget those 129. If you're actually concerned about the 58,000, I'm sure you'll want to remember those other 129 KIA and the xxx MIA."

End of question! The guy sat down and shut up before things got worse for him.

Although, upon further review, maybe that was James Stockdale...
