After just seven minutes, the hammer came down at $157 million—or $181.2 million with fees—making Number 7A, 1948 the most expensive Pollock ever sold at auction.

“It is with this work that Pollock finally frees himself from the shackles of conventional easel painting and produces one of the first truly abstract paintings in the history of art,” according to the lot essay. “In Number 7A, 1948 we witness the reinvention of painting, opening the door to a pure form of expression suitable for the modern postwar world.”

Born in Cody, Wyoming, in 1912, Pollock began painting in earnest when he moved to New York City in 1930. His early influences ranged from Thomas Hart Benton’s Regionalism to Mexican muralists, and he was particularly inspired by Pablo Picasso’s Guernica, which he saw in 1939.

That same year, Pollock started Jungian psychoanalysis while seeking treatment for alcoholism. Through these sessions, as well as a burgeoning interest in Surrealism, he developed a fascination with investigating the subconscious. He was also drawn to automatism, an artistic technique that involved surrendering conscious control of the creative process.

“I want to express my feelings rather than illustrate them,” Pollock once said. “ It seems to me that the modern painter cannot express this age—the airplane, the atom bomb, the radio—in the old technique.”

The art world has been worse off ever since.

I mean great for whoever was able to get some sucker to pay that, but I prefer my art and architecture to bring beauty into the world.

You can make whatever argument you want about whatever statement you think the piece makes, but it honestly brings nothing worthwhile to the world.

I read "Jackson Pollock: An American Saga" by Gregory White Smith and Steven Naifeh a couple of years ago. It's a great book and won the Pulitzer Prize for biography in 1991.

Anyway, Pollock was a miserable jerk of a human being, a chronic alcoholic, and abusive to his family and friends. He often lamented that Picasso had already said everything there was to say through modern art. He stumbled onto the drip "technique" literally by accident, and went with it because it was something new and different and because a prominent New York art critic, Clem Greenberg, gave Pollock's new work a good review. Plus Peggy Guggenheim offered him a monthly stipend to continue churning out the paintings because she thought they were interesting.. And since he was almost always broke, why the hell not?

And now...$181 million

The art of being an artist is getting paid well to be an artist before you die.

Out of curiosity, how much did it likely cost the person who painted that to paint it? There is the cost of the canvas, paint, brushes and whatever else they use.. Then time. How long did it take? Did the artist have a degree?
