quote:I think it's completely absurd to say that from a legal standpoint.
I remember when this first happened (I fly into Jackson often); I heard several arguments form locals who said in that situation, the proper thing to do is let someone steal your car and 1)call the police, and/or 2)file an insurance claim.
Basically they were saying what the guy did was illegal vigilante justice. What do you think?
Personally, if I saw someone in my driveway stealing my car, I really doubt that I'd grab a gun and confront them, to be honest. If they're that brazen, I'm sure they'll have no qualms about shooting at me. It's just a car, not worth the risk. I'll call 911, stay inside and make sure me and my boys are safe while waiting for the cops. That being said, I have zero issues with someone deciding it's worth it for them to protect their car.
And either way, the story says he only confronted the thief, but it was the thief who tried to attack him, right? So I'm not even sure why it matters, he was standing his ground...unless of course there are elements to the story being left out?

It didn't even look like the kid was trying to steal the vehicle but instead just cause damage to it. I mean he threw the rock or whatever multiple times, if he can't break into a car properly is it really to be believed he was going to hot wire it also? No way.
As a gun advocate, it's not a great video for the defense as the perp was on the ground. But at the same time there was clearly a struggle and things happen off scene you can't see.
It was also odd that the cop didn't go check on the perp faster.
