Finished in the bottom 10% of my class. Passed it the first time
One of my buddies finished ranked absolutely last in our class at LSU, and passed it on the first time. It was not even a bump in the road. One license is as good as the next.

Loyola and Tulane with a higher pass rate for first time takers. Things have definitely changed among the law schools in Louisiana.
The takers are significantly
Lower than usual too.
Loyola only had 100 and LSU 125.

Imagine waiting on a letter instead.

frick that. Three 8 hour days of writing on a legal pad until your hand is going to fall off (pre-computer days) is a rite of passage all new lawyers should have to endure.
I get that it seems ridiculous, but I took the one day and it was fricking hard. "open book" only means so much when you have 50 minutes to read a 3 page fact pattern and answer 7 essay style questions. Besides a few easy copy and paste things (Negligence analysis, divorce types, etc.,) it was straight memory.
I will say the 3 days sound like hell, but going through the last decade of old exams, the questions didn't really vary enough to account for time.
Now the handwriting part I will absolutely admit that I'm too much of a bitch to do that

What’s a letter?
Imagine actually going to the school to get your grades.
We had an area called the "wailing wall" where grades were posted by student ID number on wide dot-matrix printed pages with a handwritten index card above them with the class name/number. You either did that or waited about 2 weeks for the thing we used to call a letter that came in the mail, you know kinda like an Amazon package.
