They could pay them 100k a year and the schools would still suck

chicken or the egg

they only get shitty candidates as teachers because the pay sucks.
the schools suck because all the teachers are shitty.

paying the shitty teachers more money doesn't fix anything.
but would better pay attract better teachers?

seen just how many bad teachers are protected.

I whist got back from a weekend trip with 2 teachers in the Katy, TX school system. Both have countless examples of the Admins hanging teachers out to dry when it came to disciplinary issues. They didn’t complain much about pay, just the inability to keep order in their classroom. My guess is that the students in EBR system are much worse, but again, I can only base that off having lived in both places.

Their main complaint was that the disruptive students ruined the learning environment and made it impossible to teach and the Admins took that parents/students side every time. They also complained about the unspoken pressure to pass kids that didn’t deserve it so the schools scores stayed high.

Sounds a terrible environment to teach in. I don’t know how that translates to teacher pay raises in EBR, but I’m sure it contributes to the teacher shortage, at least.

Hopefully you were paid more for your hard work. I’m all for merit based pay, but I know how corrupt the system is and that just doesn’t work. If you do more work then you definitely deserve more pay.

I was Teacher of the Month and got a $25 gift card. For teaching double the students at the same time. I'm not bothered by that at all, but the stress was part of the reason that I took last year off from the classroom and simply focused on my business.

Our school was actually short three math teachers that year. I knew a kid at Woodlawn Middle that same year who didn't get a math teacher until the end of November.

Yes, the low pay isn't the only problem. Dealing with bureaucracy and disruptive kids isn't always fun.

But "the school system is bad, so we should pay teachers less" doesn't make sense to me.

Yep.

We have very good and competitive teachers' pay here. Gov.Deal started raising it and Gov.Kemp has raised it even more substantially

I will say this, though. EBR's staffing problems would be so much worse if they hadn't already lost so many students to charter schools.

The only reason that EBR has anything close to enough teachers is that the system needs fewer of them each year.
