A few years back a friend and I were walking with his 4 year old daughter through his pasture

It's really corny but when my daughter was little we lived in a place with lots of snakes. I grew up where snakes were common too so I decided that the best way to make her aware of them but not afraid was to show them to her and figure out what kind they were.

We kept a reptile journal of all of the species we saw and which ones were dangerous (we only had 2). She liked doing it and she now laughs at her mother for freaking out about a ribbon snake on the back patio at 15.

I honestly think the main reason he killed the rattler was because it actually scared him seeing her that close to it. And, it being a baby it was harder to notice and potentially more dangerous than the adult. He also knew it was close and she played outside in the area closest the the pasture. That was a judgment call that I couldn't argue with.

She hunts with him now and loves the outdoors.

Yeah I'd kill them in my backyard too but that's simply because I don't want it curled up on my backdoor mat the next morning. We have dogs too. I'd leave it alone if I saw it in the woods.

Had this racer next to my trashcan maybe two weeks ago. I'll probably see 20 snakes in my yard before it gets cool again in the late fall. Most likely all 20 will live.

I had thought about starting a thread going into the Summer telling people about a couple apps that would help give them and their kids something to do around the house or when on vacation.

The iNaturalist app is really cool. You can take pics of any living thing from weeds to walruses and upload it to their database. Other users can help identify what it is and your pics can actually become "Research Grade". It also allows you to explore your area for sightings and see what others have found/spotted.

Another great one is the Audubon app. It has a bird identifier and a sightings list on it. You can spot birds, look up what they are, and keep a running list of your sightings.

Both of those get the kids out of the house and gives them reason to observe and learn. It can also turn into a photography hobby as they learn to take pics of what they see. I think it is a great way to provide some learning and quality time when they are out of school.

Doesn't LA have a Nutria problem that the snakes probably help with?

pretty sure the palm was/is to raze Wyly Tower at LPI. ?

It is but I don't know about any time frame. It doesn't really fit in with the campus architecture and I understand it's in need of substantial maintenance and renovation. Maybe Davison will pony up and they'll name the replacement after him.

. Despite having the same unusual spelling of his last name and being from the same small town,as best I can tell he's not related to the other Wylys. Not closely anyway.
