Is This A Dentist Scam?

Moved to Dallas a while back. Just chose a new dentist based off proximity to my home and online reviews. I called to make an appt for new patient exam, x-rays and a cleaning. I was told that I would be seen for the exam and xrays, but that they would schedule the cleaning for another time based on what type of cleaning I would need, which they couldn't determine until my exam.
My dentist in Nola always did exam, xrays and cleaning in one visit.
It sounds to me like they're trying to get 2 visits paid for by insurance instead of one, but maybe this is common practice. Any dentists on the OT want to chime in?

Sketchy. Maybe based on your call they think you're a mush mouth bastard.

I don't have insurance, and I don't pay per visit, but only for the services they performed.
I just got a new dentist, and he did x-rays and exam and scheduled me for a cleaning a couple of weeks later.

All dentists are a scam. Just brush your teeth.

I'm not a dentist but I've encountered this a smaller dentist offices in BR. The procedure should be charged not the number of "visits"

Actually, I'm in my late 20's and have yet to get a cavity.
I think I'm going to look for another dentist. If they're trying to scam now, I can only imagine what they're going to tell me I need.

Guaranteed you will "need" that deep cleaning where they jam that chisel down between your tooth and gum. Have fun with that!

You have dental insurance? You wanna know the real scam?

Dentists don't actually do the cleanings. They have assistants for that, so it might be that the assistant was busy for that day you were going in.

weird. I moved here in January, went to a new dentist in February and had the exam, x rays, and cleaning all in one visit.
went back last week for another cleaning, ended up needed some work done on a chipped tooth I had fixed when I was a kid. they did it the same day right after my cleaning.

Im just messing around of course. I did go to a new dentist and for the first visit I was literally in the chair for over 2 hours (Ive never had a cavity either). They might just do in 2 appointments and not actually scamming insurance. This dentist took no less than 50 x-rays then did bite tests, joint test, all kind of bullshite. I never went back.

Some of dentist here in Houston do same thing. They do some test to check the depth of your gums and then recommend you come back for deep cleaning. The thought of that just scares me

I only pay $12/month for dental insurance.

Your thoughts are fairly justified. Few things rank lower than dentist appointment on my list of preferred activities.

That's pretty common, now when they recommend a deep cleaning then that's the scam

Who the hell pays per visit and not per service?
The insurance company (if you have it) is sure as shite paying per service.

The office is likely busy and they have no idea what kind of filthy pie hole you have by just talking to you over the phone so they can't schedule the correct amount of time they need to clean. Hygienists, who aren't inexpensive to have in the office, usually clean teeth and if the office is rocking, then they need to schedule efficiently. The separated appointments likely just means that they want to do what is right for you (quick prophy vs. deep cleaning) rather than treat everything like its a nail when all you have is a hammer. If you like the office, doc, staff then go back and see what happens.
I doubt that its a scam. If they were scamming they would likely wouldn't have let you walk out the door.

Not necessarily a scam but they're trying to get paid twice. It's like going into a doctor's office and once they find out you have good insurance, they order every frickin' test on the planet.
