It's not. The Buick 3800's origins were back in the 60's.

It is a downsized V8 design, though, in that it has a 90-degree bank angle. Same with the Ford 3.8L from the Mustang, Windstar, etc.

My mother in law passed away last May. She had a 97 Le Sabre that was in near mint condition that only had 70k miles. My wife got it so it can be our sons first car to drive. He just turned 16.

Hell of a car. Granny car - never got a single ticket in mine. 36-38mpg hwy. bulletproof engine if the upper-manifold gasket has already been replaced.

Nice stock alternator can handle aftermarket amp/subs.

Great starter car.

My grandmother gave her grandkids her car rather than trading. My older cousin got an 82 Lincoln Mark VI two door in 87 and my sister and got a 87 Chrysler 5th Avenue in 1993. Granny loved those big sedans with V8’s. I felt like the baddest sob in Texas running 85mph on those gravel roads, cowboy hat and sunglasses on, floating like on a cloud while sitting on that plush velour couch. How I survived I’ll never know.

Laugh all you want, but it was much better than the bus.

We have bought Buick beaters for two of my daughters for HS and college. The first was a 2001 Century. Ran like a top. Bought it for $1200, put about $1500 in it over the 8 years we had it before selling for $750. (My daughter wrecked it a month before we sold it). We would have got $1500 for it otherwise.

Current daughter has a 2004 Buick Lesabre. We have put about $4000 in it after buying for $2000 over 8 years years. I am hoping to get $1000 for it next week. We are getting her a new car for graduation.

Those old Buicks are tanks and run like the wind and for a long time.

We had a 78 Buick Lasabre. Thing was still running in the mid 90s and had been handed down 3 times.
