What titty bar are you at?

I know you've been to Fleur De Lis Pizza. I'm pretty sure its cash or check only.

Some businesses cut their budgets at every corner including not paying the credit card processing company to accept each transaction.
While I always prefer cash, it does make it easier to refer back to the processor's log each qtr at tax time. FYI I use square. I have one of those white swivel processors that use an iPad and I enjoy being able to text or email the receipt rather than keep those paper receipts and copy rolls.
ETA: when there are any remaining balances due I can email the invoice to the client instead of sending out a bill by mail.

Small businesses in an area with a cash culture might be able to survive without accepting credit or debit cards.

This is just another riff on those 'who uses cash anymore?' threads.

Okay, then they give a 3% discount for cash. Thats legal, last time I checked.

Yep and in business for as long as I can remember.

I know a lot of bars that are cash only. Some of the best ones actually.

Buds Broiler is one of the only places I know of that doesn't accept cards. I guess the tax evasion thing is the only thing that makes sense. I know they must miss out on a lot of business because of this.

At least they take checks.

This is the primary reason I will never be back to Lambert's. It's overrated too, for stuff I can cook at home. But when you have multiple locations and a two hour wait, take the stupid card and don't give me a "we're just a simple mom & pop store" line.

Drug Emporium doesn't take CC, only cash, checks, and debit cards.
I don't think Sam's took/takes CC either, but that may have changed though.
The transaction is between the buyer and the seller. Why should an invisible 3rd party get 2-3% of the deal as a fee?
Consider a $35 purchase from Home Depot: you could plunk down $40 cash, take your $5 change and be done with it. Or you could charge it to a CC and the merchant then pays a 2-3% fee to the CC processor and potentially the buyer pays 20% or more interest buy not paying off his balance every month. These purchases get very expensive on the back end with all of that.
We can demonize the CC business all day long, but wouldn't we all like to be getting 2-3% of purchases on tens of thousands of businesses?
Yes. Yes we would.

Cash payers subsidize credit card rewards programs. Thanks cash-only individuals!

This is a good thread to divide the salary guys from the guys that run their own business. That 2-3.5% comes straight from the profit margin, I don't know why more businesses don't refuse cc's but have an ATM they own. They could go from a 2-3% loss to a 3-5% gain by offering cards.
The main business that doesn't take cards generally across the board is auto sales. Few do.

Foreigners who naively think they don't lose any business by not accepting cards?

Troy at the Barber Shop doesn't take cards either. He will tell you about the ATM machine at the Cracker Barrel across the street. Bring your cash losers.
Woman that cuts my hair only takes cash, also many of the places I frequent to eat out, never thought it was that unusual.

And no I don't care that you have an atm machine I don't want to have to pay a withdrawal fee
Perhaps they don't want their cash customers to subsidize your credit card/Debit fees?
