It seems to have devolved into a Russian port-o-let in low Earth orbit.

Waste of money. I'm all for space development, this wasn't the way to go. A big come together international political show mute than anything. We could have done hundreds of times more science for the same price. And worked on developing a better earth to orbit lift system while we're at it.

Used to be awesome when the shuttle would chase it and you could watch both going across the sky right next to each other.

Maybe, but it has a nice workout gym and you get to drink your own piss.

And, they'll leave the light on for you.

Baton Rouge is at times closer to the ISS than it is to Houston.

sure, but I think a lot of projects they undertake up there are because they are up there. They aren't up there just for those studies

Best way to study the effects of prolonged space travel is prolonged space travel. They could have spent money creating that environment down here but that doesn't help you work out the bugs of setting up our environment up there. Plus it's not the same mentally knowing you really aren't on your own.

I just did a tour at NASA in Houston with Little DLawnboy. Everything NASA now is about getting to Mars. They are using ISS to test all sorts of things right now for this trip. 2 main things are the long term effects of space to the human body and the growth of food. The food issue is a big problem because the trip to Mars is 6 months both ways. No way to pack enough food with the other items so they need to figure out how to grow it. Watched ISS fly over a couple of weeks ago. Pretty neat. Will be flying over Lafayette at 945pm this Saturday.
