I'll be very curious to see how many spectators attend this year.

Zika

ETA: Seriously, if this isn't a plot straight from a movie. Terrible virus with little to no symptoms. Brazil is a huge hot spot, and we are sending representatives from every country in the world to visit and then return home.

ISIS will claim responsibility for the Zika virus.

I'm going to Lollapalooza in July. It's about 100,000 people in Chicago. Obviously everyone is unarmed and there is security, but no more than a few cops at each gate. Call me crazy, but I'm a little concerned.

eta assumed you were referring to terrorism in light of recent events.

Well the water conditions are pretty horrible(raw sewage, etc). If you are an athlete doing any non-pool water events, you could face some serious health risks from having to get in the bodies of water there.

Olympics are usually hampered with disease and STD's, RIO is going to cause some super virus outbreak

And some tourist is going to die in a robbery

Probably not. The only thing thats really in Rio is the opening and closing ceremonies at Maracanã. Most everything else is over in Barra da Tijuca, which is the rich part.

I'm sure people will have things stolen but that's expected when you go to Rio.

All the tourists are gonna get mugged, beat, raped, and possibly kidnapped.

I'm going to this as well. I have to say that a terrorist attack during Lollapalooza has never crossed by mind.

The endorsements those games create for winners outweighs the concern for Zika. Otherwise their sports are pretty much irrelevant. I do think attendance will suffer.

Interesting article.....

LINK

Didn't realize it is actually their "winter" there in Rio in August. Article says it's their flu season there in August so people have a greater risk of getting the flu than zika.

i wonder what the normal "profit" is for a well attended olympics

i would think in terms of the local business its good but the government probably about breaks even with all of their investments

I'd bet that the Brazilian gov't will end up losing a little bit of deneiro, ya think?

Me either, and I know it probably sounds paranoid.
