Is this place in BR? I usually bring my gi when I travel and I go to BR a bunch for work. What background is the head instructor?
Josh and the JM instructors are generally very cool with cross training and visitors. Except during the week we bring in a guest instructor. I would just give a courtesy call a few days before you come to ask if its cool if you visit. Shouldn’t be a problem.

I trained with him when he moved to the warehouse off of bammel north Houston
I am sure we probably rolled together then. Pretty amazing how many top shelf BJJ black belts came out of that early formation of NE Houston guys. Obviously Alvis Solis was the backbone but Travis, Donnie, Darren, Tom, Andy, and Steve all were the foundation of jits in our corner of Houston back then.

I trained in it and mma for a time and really enjoyed it. Would love to get back into it simply for the exercise and mental aspect of it but my body wouldn't allow it.

Ive come to realize that this is with most 'new' students. I worked with a guy who had started not long ago and kept telling everyone how badass he was and how they should join his gym and 'roll' with him. I offered and he declined.

BJJ is a real form of fighting, unlike karate or kung fu BS
How is karate not a real form of fighting? A lot of MMA strikers use a karate style in their striking and there are also full contact karate organizations.

Yeah but it shouldn’t take 10 plus years to be a black belt either

Yeah
It wasn’t for me personally but I wish them the best

It doesn't but then again, you need to get on a mat about 3 or 4 days a week for about 5 years. Honestly, a BJJ Blue Belt would mop the floor with anybody else from any other martial art regardless of rank outside of maybe a solid boxer and boxing isn't considered a martial art.

It is but once it became too sport based the art got watered down and people were opening up mcdojos

Everyone's journey is different. I started jiu jitsu at 12 in California.
When we moved back to Louisiana there were no jiu jitsu schools. Most people never heard of it.
When I got to LSU, Sam Hoger was there, and I think he was a brown belt at the time. I trained with him and got a blue belt. When he graduated there were no other bjj options in Baton Rouge. I dabbled in judo for a while.
Then I moved to Atlanta. There were a few gyms there, but I could never train more than once a week, and never got past the blue belt.
Then I moved back to Baton Rouge and I didnt train for about 8 years.
When I finally got back into it, I got a purple belt, and then a brown.
At damn near 38 it has been 26 years since my first lesson, and still not a black belt.

Not in a Gracie school with Helio Gracie on the wall. That might be true for them Gracie Barra schools though. We train for self defense and real world survival first and foremost.

Over the last year I have been seeing a ton of guys in my hometown area taking up jiujitsu
I guarantee they listen to Joe Rogan. He practices it and talks about it on his pods

I understand that...but that doesn't mean there still aren't good schools out there that still teach quality fighting skills.

It hasn't been quite that long for me but I feel you because I started no-gi and did that MMA thing for several years before my dumb arse finally asked how do I get ranked doing this?

I was talking about karate but you are correct

I approach everything like I am still a white belt.
