Is it unprofessional to ask the manager why the job is currently open?

I have a meeting with a manager today about a position that just came open. Is it ok to ask why the position came open?

Not only is it ok, but ask the manager why he/she feels they are right for their job. Turn the tables on them. Works every time.

Why would you not? Important to know if someone retired, couldn't handle the workload, or "took another opportunity"

I don't see why it wouldn't be unless you are attempting to pry into information that is none of your business. If you are just curious as to why it has been vacated then you are fine.

Absolutely not, it's actually a very good question for a candidate to ask. shows depth of thought

Only ask if you're prepared to answer why you left your last job.

Most interviewers will ask this question or if you are employeed they will ask "Why are you currently looking?" There's nothing wrong with asking why is the job open. Sometimes I even ask why did the last person who filled this role leave.
The way I approach my interviews is I'm interviewing them to guage whether or not if it's a good fit me and my professional goals just like they are interviewing me to see if I'm a good fit for the job and the company.

Don't ask, it's too passive. Demand the information you want and he'll respect you more.

I always ask. Are they replacing someone or expanding?

Agreed but I find this only works during the initial handshake. And only if that handshake is brutally firm and you're glaring them in the eye. Lets them know you've put real thought into and aren't beta.

Yes. It's a great question.
If they're backfilling the role, then ask what happened to the last person.
If that person was fired, then ask why.
