Is it chauvinistic to NOT smack a woman?

Is it patronizing and condescending to allow a woman to mouth off and become physical with you and not show her the hand?
I love and respect women (my mom is a woman) and I believe women are independent, smart and strong. I hear many women today championing my shared belief that they are equal to men. But I am told by many men and women that no man should ever hit a woman. This has me confused.
Under what circumstances is a woman due a retaliatory smack?
