My truck is over 100k miles next month and I change my own oil.

I keep seeing ads for high mileage oil suggested for engines with over 100k miles. Is this a necessity or will the usual synthetic stuff be fine?

Truck was purchased new mid-2010s

No auto board, so if this needs to be moved feel free admins.

It contains additives that help old gaskets expand to maintain seals.

Not necessarily, most of the time it means a more robust additive package.

If you want your truck to run better longer, get 100% synthetic. I’m not talking about “full synthetics” like royal purple, mobile, t6… etc those are only semi synthetic.

I’ve ran them all in different applications, hotshots secret makes the best by far, followed by amsoil.

Got a link to that? Both claim to be full synthetic and always have been as far as I know.

eta-Those additives can work wonders. The PS pump on my 1970 442 W30 was leaking a bit. Not unusual on a car that sits far more than driven for decades. Some Lucas PS fluid with the additives solved that problem.

They’re definitely not, and no I don’t have a link. Just the industry I work in and the reports we’ve seen when we send stuff to get analyzed.

Yes, they make a huge difference.

Been running Amsoil synthetics in my vehicles and farm equipment for 20 years. Oil, ATF, hydraulic, etc. Oil change every 12 months or 25K miles. Fully recommend.

Difference between full synthetic and 100% synthetic.

I know people are fans of certain oils and swear by them. I used to only use mobil. Then I started using 100% class 3/4 synthetic and it had made every vehicle last longer and get better mileage.

Yep, amsoil is great.

Look into hotshot’s secret. We’ve seen great results from their stuff.

Anything higher than a group III is just called a full synthetic but there are higher grade oils in group IV and V. In Europe, group III is called a conventional oil but in the US it's marketed as synthetic.

You can search synthetic base stock oils and you can learn more if you want.

They need to work on their marketing. The names are kind of odd.

an oil is “synthetic” and may be labeled as such provided it uses only Group III, Group IV or Group V base oils in any combination or ratio.

That being the case, the terms “100% synthetic” and “full synthetic” describe the same thing. They’re synonymous, and an oil marketer can use whichever it prefers provided the oil in the bottle meets the industry description of “synthetic” outlined above.

All synthetics are at least class 3.

I mean...it's your link.

As stated above -

High mileage oil is not a scam. It contains additives that work to condition seals, prevent leaks by swelling seals, help prevent oil burn off, and other misc things that help with an aging engine.

Full - Synthetic does not necessarily mean 100% synthetic. Nearly all full-syn pcmo on the market is a petroleum base (Group 3) whose properties meet the standard to be considered Full-synthetic (Viscosity Index over 120, > 90% saturates).

If you want to go deep down this rabbit hole, go visit the forums at Bobistheoilguy.com

All the oil info you’d ever want to know is with those folks there. You’ll have guys that have used oil analysis to back their POV and they don’t suffer bs. Seriously, you’d never guess that there was so much info to consume about oil, oil change intervals and used oil testing.

You can spend the rest of your life on bobistheoilguy.com

"Full Synthetic" doesn't mean much in the US, the API doesn't even reference it anymore. IMO outside of the rare engines that require an extremely specific oil like the BWM S54B32 I owned or use an engine in severe/extreme duty regularly a good group III with a solid additive package is more than enough protection given reasonable drain periods to ensure when the vehicle dies it isn't from oil quality issues.
