Have you ever done strike nursing?
No I never did. But I've heard the same thing. Used to work with a nurse that did strike nursing years ago.
He would work like 100 days in a row(12 hour shifts). He would make enough money in those 100 days that he wouldn't work again for another year. The agency that hired him put him up in a nice hotel for that time. Said he worked his 12 hours, would come back to the hotel and eat at the restaurant, shower, and watch tv...then sleep and start all over again the next day. Obviously he was single with no kids.

TIL OT nurses make what brain surgeons do. Without the OT, and long hours.

You don't just decide to go to "nursing school" in the Fall, which is less than 6 months. Have you done your prerequisites?

The fact is, you do not have to work a ton of overtime - only have experience and be motivated enough to pursue nursing opportunities that require getting out of your comfort zone and learning a new role.
There's a lot of "OT baller" going on in this thread. The above quote is probably one of the only true statements. The opportunity to make good money as a nurse is there, if you want it.
Everybody saying their dad, wife, sister, husband, third cousin, the dude that took a piss next to him at the Saints game, or whoever that is a nurse and pulls in >$100k a year in Louisiana without working OT is leaving out a lot of information. To make that kind of money without OT requires certain characteristics most nurses don't have.
I'm truly interested to know if the company these people are working for is hiring. I would love to make $48/HR without being an agency/travel/contract nurse, having 10+ years of experience, obtaining advanced certifications, having to convince doctors to by my company's product...
Bottom line, will you get rich or have a decent living being a nurse? It all depends on what you are willing to do. A nursing license opens many doors. Maybe you can find one of these "unicorn" nursing jobs that the OT is referring to.

I'm a proud member of the California Nurses association, I make almost $80/ hr with 24 years of experience. It's hard work, but rewarding. I know Nurses that just graduated with ADNs and easily got jobs.

Well, perhaps you should go back and read ALL the posts first, tell me what is incorrect with them.
Okay, what are your credentials and what would you like to do?

I've read all the posts. You're wife has an advanced certification that most nurses will not have. A wound care nurse is a specialized nurse, so if she makes >$100k she probably earns it because there aren't many of her.
I guess you didn't read when I said, nurses that make $100k a year, have certain characteristics that most nurses don't have.
I also said, to make that kind of money you have to be willing to do certain things. I could never do wound care, because I can't take the smell.
6 years ER, I've traveled, have my certs for the department, been a charge nurse. If you've got a job that offers $100k for 40 hours a week, I'll adapt unless it's wound care.

And you said there was a lot of information left out. Not in this instance. It can be done in other areas besides wound care. Several posts, including mine, made mention of this as well as going beyond direct patient care in hospitals and other acute or long term care facilities.
I did read what you said but it much more than characteristics.

Maybe characteristics was a bad choice of words, but my point is, making that kind is money is not the norm and not what is to be expected graduating from school.
You can't make that kind of money without long term experience, being in sales, or have a specialty certification.
I'm not arguing that the earning potential isn't there, I'm just saying it is few and far between.

One of the few things I think we can all agree on is that 80$/hr in California isnt the same thing as 80$/hr anywhere else in the country.
I do believe you when you say those wages can be had, but I would want to start asking other questions like how much would you pay for a house compared to that same house here.

I can vouch for making 100k a year as an RN. I have made at least that much since my second year as a nurse. Its actually pretty easy for a night shifter that is not afraid of a little OT. I have since gone to days and seen many raises and opportunities to advance in the ICU setting. Best career decision I ever made. I also married an RN who is killing it. I remember being that guy that finished his undergrad degree and was making $11 an hr, constantly looking for jobs/ opportunities to advance. The job sites were filled with jobs that required "experience" with no way to get a foot in the door and gain experience... then there were all of those nursing jobs. I did an accellerated associates RN degree and 10 months later I had my choice at jobs. Then I got my BSN while working.

Also, being a male nurse-dude, think of all the nurses you get to work with, go have drinks with and all that! Can't put a $$/hr on that.
All of the nurses I know treat their coworker male nurses like gay best friends

California Tiger, are staffing regulations still in place in California? Curious if you are union or if nursing there pretty much unionized? Thanks.

Nursing should not be all about making as much money as you can. That would be the wrong reasons to go into nursing. I have worked with nurses who do make $100K by working full time in hospitals (12 hour shifts) and on their day off working prn for agencies. The money is so important to some that the quality of their work suffers. There are many who work strictly for the paycheck. I left in hospital work because I got sick of cleaning up behind them. Believe it or not some of the laziest slobs of nurses are management pets. Am temporarily working as DON of a home health agency and one of our nurses is all about the money and works for more than one home health agency and a hospital. Her work is definitely less than quality. It shows and she won't be getting more of the higher pay visits because of this. I can see her lack of attention and lack of critical thinking in her paperwork. If you are thinking about going into nursing, first make sure you are not doing it with the goal of getting rich, as that is not what nursing is about.
BTW, akimoto, this is not directed to you or your post. Just needed a place to post. Thanks.
