Neh, it's all about the appearance of being a badass, and the possibility that you might use it. Keeps people on their toes.

It means they want to defend their nuclear energy program from attack. What else could it possibly mean? It's an air defense system

Terrorists flew planes into the world trade center here so it isn't too hard to imagine them flying planes into a nuclear reactor in Iran?

That is one of the most stupid comments I've read on here in a while.

Do you know what a S-300 SAM actually is and/or what it's capable of doing?

They are developing nuclear weapons programs in the middle east and you DON"T want them to defend it?

I don't want them to have nuclear weapons at all.

They don't need peaceful nuclear energy because they're literally swimming in oil and gas. Don't be a child. At least admit what we're talking about.

Please tell me you don't actually believe the Iranians are only developing nuclear "energy" and not nuclear weapons. Come on now.

Not to alarm anyone, but we figured out the Soviets were putting nuclear missiles in Cuba because of the air defense system they installed. It was a signature item. I mean, you don't put SAM sites up unless: 1. You have something to protect from an air strike, and 2. You are expecting an air strike.

^This. And the S-300 will take out anything in our inventory... Nothing is safe.

And as much air space as they can. Iran is known to have an old and obsolete Air Force. Combine that with the advanced Air forces of the US, Israel, and even other Arab states and Iran is horribly mismatched.

US has mighty Air Force
US enemy builds air defense

Eta: and Iran probably is afraid of an airstrike, but it's not from us.

The S-300 is no joke. That's for sure. It can shoot down just about any fighter, bomber, and even cruse missiles.

The situation with Iran has just got a lot more complicated and we've just lost most of our options on dealing with it.

Yes, thanks Obama. And thanks Kerry. And thanks Hillary Clinton. You've fricked us over about as well as possible.

Think that is why they are trying their best to push the F-35 into being cleared?

Yeah, or maybe it's Russia's fault for selling them the system? You think those sanctions were going to last forever?

Hell, the contract was signed in 2007 (why didn't Bush do anything about it!?) but was put on hold in 2010 due to sanctions.

I don't blame either administration FWIW, what else do you expect the U.S. to do? Actually attack Iran and see how that shite goes?

Thpp

The sanctions had been in place for years. They were not going anywhere. The only way the sanctions were going to fail is if we lifted them. And that's exactly what that worthless big-eared idiot Obama did. That stupid piece of dog shite freed up and gave back billions to Iran. Without that cash, Iran can't afford what is arguably one of the world's most advanced air defense systems. So yeah, frick Obama and the rest. The blame for this lays squarely at their feet.

You tell me right now what our other options are?

There's continued sanctions. Does that hurt Iran? Yes. Would Russia have moved through with the deal? Nope. But Iran would have kept pursuing a nuclear bomb (which I have no doubt that was their end goal) and would have slowly but surely worked their way there. In short, sanctions can slow but cannot stop determined progress.

There's also the option of an attack against nuclear facilities. Israel has done it against Iraq and Syria after all. However, Iran is much larger, further away for Israel, has more robust terrain and has better means of disrupting commerce in the Persian Gulf. Plus there is no telling what kind of fallout or conflict would have happened if there was an attack. Not to mention, that doesn't stop Iran from discontinuing its program.

The deal is far, far from perfect. It has plenty of glaring issues. But a deal is probably the best of those 3 options as it stripped Iran of a lot of its progress and will make it harder for them to hide stuff (although its far from impossible).

And now there is no going back, because if the next administration withdrawals we will not be joined by Europe, Russia, or China. If we withdrawal, we will be alone in it.
