The audio of the actual sinking is captivating. The captain was a complete moron. He let his pride overtake the preservation of his ship. He refused help thinking he could seal off the flooded bays (which had all the power supply) then made the fricking idiotic decision that a modern cruise liner might rest deck up on a reef. The unedited comms should be broadcast on open airwaves. It's disgusting.

I remember finding and listening to the audio of the Italian coast guard speaking to the captain over a phone. At this point the ship was listing heavily and a lot of passengers were sort standing on the side.
The coast guard asked him approximately how many passengers were on the top deck of the ship awaiting rescue (you could actually see them trying to come down a very steep ladder) and the dip shite could not even provide an estimate because he was in the process of leaving the ship already.

Didn't one of the Coast Guard guys start yelling at him over the radio and telling him to get his arse back on the ship?

After abandoning the ship, Capt Schettino was told by a furious Coast Guard officer: "Get back on board, for frick's sake."
The order was given by an incredulous Gregorio De Falco after he found out that Capt Schettino had jumped into a lifeboat while hundreds of passengers and crew were still on board the Concordia.
The phrase went viral in Italy, appearing on t-shirts and posters.

Yes. He had passengers lined up down a ladder on the side of the ship and he was in the water in a boat floating around making excuses. Dead bodies already in the water. A captain who had abandoned ship with over a 100 people left onboard and dead bodies in the water. Complete coward.

I saw the one on NatGeo and Discovery.
Here Is a link with some pictures of them actually dismantling the ship. LINK
Also, I missed that the ship purportedly sank with a shipment of cocaine on board.

Italy’s most feared crime syndicate, the Ndrangheta, hid drugs on board the cruise ship which partially capsized in January 2012, according to The Independent. “The same ship that made us a laughingstock around the world, took the piss out of us too,” Ndrangheta boss Michele Rossi was reportedly heard saying to an associate, Massimo Tiralongo, according to police.
