The old thread is now locked. It was posted on 11/01/2023. Here we are in June of '25 and this hasn't happened. What's going on? USA Today article.

"Gros Bec" has to be really insensitive, especially if the bird has a really big beak...

As dumb as some of it is, I am actually in favor of the changes for the eponymous names. Not because they are racist, but because they simply are not descriptive. Putting Cooper's in front of hawk tells one nothing about the hawk itself.

on the topic of birds. I was fixing to cut my grass yesterday when out of nowhere a big arse hawk started coming at me. I don't know where, but I heard some rustling and in the corner of my eye there it is head level with me, talons set to take me away. First time I had to run away from a bird in my life. I have watched this thing grow from an adolescent for about two years.

edit. did some research and im fairly certain it was a Mississippi kite.

I met an old landowner up in St. Francaisville I was doing a project for and he loved birds. One of his favorite birds was a swallow. I shite you not, his email address was swallows@cox.net. It took everything I had in me to not bust out laughing in his face when he told me that.

Seen them in person in the Galapagos Islands for a grad school trip in college.

That was a pretty sweet trip.
