Nearly 800 incarcerated people are among the more than 7,500 personnel helping fight the historic, and destructive, Southern California wildfires.

This is not a new practice. California has relied on incarcerated firefighters since 1915. And prison labor has been used to respond to emergencies and disasters nationwide for centuries, said Bianca Tylek, executive director of Worth Rises, a criminal justice advocacy organization

California's department of corrections says individuals who are part of this program are there voluntarily and are paid between $5.80 and $10.24 per day

No issues with this. They also get free meals and housing.

Ummm. Inmates living rent free on the taxpayers dime should do anything they're told considering they got themselves into the shite they're in .

This was going on long before she was AG, or anything else for that matter.

I truly do not understand how something people get paid for and volunteer to do can be considered "controversial." Every single one of those inmates is thrilled to be out of jail and doing this instead.

Many of those guys would pay to work outside of the prison.

Fire Fighters Union opposes this. Politics and Prisons is a great book about this as far as Louisiana goes.

If I were in prison, I would be down to help fight fires to get out of there a bit. Also, to help contribute back to a society I apparently violated. Hence I need to make amends. Sounds like both a self-serving and noble cause, potentially.

Can they get hired on after their debt is paid? Pretty awesome if they can be. Job training for sure lowers recidivism.

They also get time off their sentence and have a job in the forestry service as a wildland firefighter waiting on them when they get out if they want it. That's the whole point.

ETA: I think it was Fire Chasers, maybe another one, on Netflix that followed and documented some people in this program.

Apparently so... seems like a win win no matter how you slice it.
