LOL, i didn't touch mine for 9 years because the board has an issue so it wont exercise. Put a new battery on it and it fired right up.

If you dont excersize them you probably have dirty slip rings which will ruin your brushes. Not a difficult repair but it takes a couple of hours.

And you have to have the brushes on hand. Which you probably wont have during/after a storm.

I would get the slip rings checked and brushes replaced as soon as hurricane season ends. The slip rings can also go bad with age. Your machine might call it overspeed. What is actually happening is it will run but will not create voltage due to bad brushes.

This dude has several videos showing how to work on them.

This one is about the slip rings.

I got a tri fuel after Ida hearing about home generators being useless due to unavailable fuel. Also remember a bad freeze a few years ago and Livingston lost power and there was a gas supply regulator issue and the growth of the area outpacing the supply in the pipes.

It's not so much they throttle back the gas, it's because there's so many being used at the same time.

That's why I'm going with diesel.

This is a helpful thread. Something I never would have considered if not for the OT.

Plan to get one in the next couple years.

Been on the fence re piping in the gas from the road or getting a propane tank.

This story has me leaning towards the propane.

Or maybe a whole house size diesel generator with a pump on the tank so I can cycle the diesel and use it for my truck and tractor to keep it fresh. Not as common I guess but seems like that would resolve the issues with NG / propane.

Once every 2-3 year hassle instead of maintenance all the time and worrying about Mayor Mom Jeans throttling back natty gas at my homie, Coon

FYI, there are 2-3 names you could drop taking way too much money building shitty neighborhoods round here.

I’d suggest bi-fuel with both connected. Run off propane in the beginning and as natural gas load decreases switch to NG. Also get an oversized meter and regulator.

Talk about the sum of all fears. You pay $15k plus for these things and have to get them maintained every couple of months in perpetuity, but then when a Cat 1 comes along the city of Thibodeaux throttles back the natural gas supply and you don't have enough juice to run these standby generators

Yep. Hospitals , First Responder locations , and government departments need that gas more than you baw.

This is more common than you would think. We just converted Dr. Higgens 38KW from natural gas to propane with a 1000 gal tank and he’s right off Hwy 1. Never enough header pressure when everyone’s units increase the demand. His is running right now without any issues

Come drop by our office when the dust settles from this

Not for the 1st 10 days. Side note after Laura the propane truck would come within 24hrs of a phone call. The negative was 600 bucks each time.

Depends on the model. On an air cooled generac very simple but there’s more steps on liquid cooled that we recommend a dealer doing the conversion since it’s more than just swapping the orifices.

On the liquid cool Briggs units it’s very simple and we have some customers in Thibodaux that have it plumbed for natural gas with our LP tank back up. Can change over on the fly if natural starts failing

They are not throttling back their NG supply. The issue is the NG distribution system is not designed for NG load for when the power goes out and every baw with a home generator kicks on.

I'm certain everyone doesn't have an electric HVAC furnace. How does Thibadaux handle cold weather surges for NG furnaces?

How hard is it to convert the natural gas to propane.
Not sure about NG to propane, but to convert a gasoline generator to propane or NG, you have to buy a new carburetor for it.

I’d rather save the $15k and just take a road trip/vacation somewhere at the threat of a major event. Even with power, most likely water and internet will be out so who cares at that point?
I agree that most people don’t need a whole home generator.

Most people like myself just need a portable generator to keep my refrigerator and two freezers running and one small window A/C unit for our bedroom.

I’d hate to lose all of the meat and fish in our freezers, plus have to replace the freezers and refrigerator if it all rotted.

3 Hurricanes in 8 years. Dumb power outages that last 30 mins to a few hours every few months. Before Ida I would have purchased a Generac. After Ida, I'll just buy a 13k Portable.

Someone in our neighborhood has the disconnect installed and goes and pulls a trailer-mounted diesel from Sunbelt ahead of a storm.

Good thinking!

ftr the biggest issue is people are not putting in separate lines and meters for the whole home. before anything else happens to the supply.....most of these are installed where the generator barely has enough fuel to begin with.

if you are running off the same meter without a different regulator as the rest of your home...good chance you are not supplying enough to begin with. read the install guide.

not saying its the case everytime but seen this happen a ton.
