In lord of the rings and the hobbit there are a couple of times they call the eagles...

Why didnt they just have them fly them to Mordor in the first place?

Always wondered this. But Sauron would’ve seen them coming with his eye and destroyed them.

There are places the Eagles won't go.

By the way, are you talking about the books or the movies? There's a million things in the movies that aren't explained, but are in the books.

To give you a dorky book answer it’s actually there in the Hobbit (book not movie)
1) the Eagles are very proud and temperamental. They’re not steeds you can just ride. If anything that kind of attitude would get someone killed.
2) the Eagles explicitly mention in the book they only take Bilbo and Co. so far because they’re scared of the long bows of the nearby sheep herders and farmers. If those kinds of things can hurt Eagles then a lot of things in Mordor can too.
Also, the story needs to happen.
