Since men can have children forever and women of all ages are attracted to older men, let me put it in terms you can understand. Imagine getting your dream job straight out of college, working your way up to middle management, and staring at a big promotion within the next year that would set you up for the life you have always wanted. And then one day, you are fired out of the blue for no other reason than your boss doesnt like you anymore and woukd prefer to have someone else in your position. You are also black balled from ever working in the industry you had planned to give your life to. You are now unemployed. And to top it off, you have to look for a job at the bottom of another industry where you will be competing with much younger coworkers. Basically, the last 10 years of your work history don't count. You're lying if you say that wouldn't hurt and confuse you and make you angry.

Totally agree. She should have moved on years ago. And I bet she isn't exactly blind to it. Just letting her hopefulness cloud her judgment

So women really do look at marriage as a career? It's nice to see one of yall finally admit it.

Jesus. No. But that's pretty much the only thing that evokes similar feelings in a man.

And here's where your analogy starts to potentially fall apart. Maybe there are some very good reasons?

Just checking in this morning... has there been an update?
I'll hang up now.

Maybe. But for the sake of the argument, I had to say that. Obviously, there are always reasons. Just some of them aren't very good ones to throw away 10 years.

Soooooo, the whole "Will you marry me?" thing she should have known was an empty promise?

Yes, you are right. Men can have children forever. Forever.

This is 2010s, students do not get their dream job out of college, and most people don't know what their dreams are.

If I was looking for a job I most certainly wouldn't work at a place that was this judgemental. It would feel like high school.

None of it. No experience you gained, no networking you created. You cannot call upon any of the skills you learned at your job because it gets erased.

This is the only sentence in your post that makes sense and should have been the only sentence in your post. But only if it's in reference to ending a 10 year relationship.

Maybe she should have tried harder when she knew there was competition for the position.
People get complacent and don't try to earn their keep. New prospects come along and who can blame them for interviewing?

Yep, definitely a career. They don't call it an MRS degree for nothing.

Pectus, can you give her analogy in geologic terms?
She seems full of schist and possibly in an upheaval.

It's a hypothetical, Pectus. The fact is, men and women do not look at relationships the same. The OP will easily move on and build the life he wants while the gf is kind of ruined. Yeah, she potentially can find another man and eventually have the family and marriage she wants. But, she might not either. Because 10 years of her life are down the drain. It's partially her fault as well because she should have seen the writing on the wall years ago. But, he should not have strung her along with an engagement and plans for a future. No way on hell this guy just started having doubts recently if it took him all those years to propose.

That happened at year 9. Year fricking 9. If I'm dating someone for 9 years I can guarantee it's not going to work out for life.
Posted on 11/13/14 at 8:20 am to TigerHam85
Exactly. She should have walked around 4 or 5.

I wonder if she was saying to herself that if he had not proposed by year 10 she was out.

Nope.
Drinks, I get it to a point. But, after so many years, you shouldn't have to point it out.
