Social distancing has largely masked this issue. Unfortunately I am sure it has gotten worse over the past year with "COVID 15" having entered our lexicon.

I fly economy a bunch for work (I know, OT poor) and as a fit, normal sized person this issue regularly presents and when I address it with the person "in my seat" I inevitably also have to deal with some bleeding heart who think's I'm fat shaming but is usually not willing to switch seats with me.

You be you, I'll be me. In our own seats.

I once saw a very large man buy two seats on a SWA flights. Screwed up the head count on the “stay on plane” connecting flight

I always address it with the person "in my seat" first to allow them to try and resolve it with the flight attendant. Some are dicks but most generally understand and want to make it right.

“When pigs fly” kept popping into my head as I read this thread.

I got seated next to a huge guy with an Arkansas Razorback shirt on - he took up about 25% of my seat. I'm slim and I tried to sit but I could just feel the heat coming off him. It was gross. Thankfully, American Airlines found me another seat.

I got 10,000 sky miles once after I asked to change seats, but there were none to be had.. and the rep took a look and had pity on my soul. Atlanta to Dayton, 2 fat bitches in the same row with me, and each one of them deserved their own row.

I know we can't hurt feelings, but by god... can't airlines at least argue that fuel calculations rely on total weight or something?

I've been on caving trips where you have to prove you can fit thru a box before being allowed to go on the tour. I'd say, make the gate a sizewise tool so that the rep can deal with it.

i downvote you and ALL of you for making fun of large people .they need to fly too .MAYBE ,,the corrupt greedy airlines could make seats in their planes LARGER that would accomodate EVERYBODY ?!?!!? huh ,how does that sound ??But no ,they would rather charge you extra money for your bag being over the weight limit . soon there will high speed monorails across this great land and airports will become extinct .

Plane seat lottery is stressful. When you get your seat early and then watch everyone come down the aisle wondering which one you'll get. Jackpot is an OT 6 or above.

I don't think you understand the economics of the airline business. Unless you agree to pay more for your tickets because the airline installs fewer seats.

Should they be double masking?

This is why I'm all about the aisle seat. Worst case scenario, at least I have some space to lean away from the issue.

LOL, you are correct. And when the flow of people slows down...and you think you may have no seatmate or maybe even a row to yourself, on walks some fat schlub carrying a pizza.

One flight from Seattle to ATL, a beautiful girl got seated next to me, and we ended up snuggling, sharing my headphones, and actually went on a few dates. We ended up going separate ways, but we are friends on facebook to this day. Fate is weird.

Maybe the large people need to get off their fat lazy arse and do some exercise 3-4 times a week and watch what they eat.

worst I've seen is a couple so fat they essentially took up 3 rows. Granted it was in the visitors bleacher corner of TS which is REALLY packed in...but they were so huge they were forcing people in-front to push and lean forward and needed elaborate chairbacks that literally left nowhere for the people behind them to put their feet. Someone got an usher who you could tell didn't know what to do so he made them remove the chairback...they argued they literally couldn't sit without them so thankfully left. Some people felt bad, but I've always thought it was inconsiderate as frick to take from other peoples comfort and experience because you have no self-control.
