Big stink in Rapides parish going on lately.Sheriff hasn’t paid any property taxes in at least 7 years nor have his 2 sisters.
Previous sheriff paid hardly anything, either but he paid a little about $46 if I remember correctly.
Assessor playing dumb, doesn’t know how that happened.
The audacity of these people is astounding to me.Sheriff is up for re-election and having a campaign event Wed.I’m going to go even though I don’t live in Rapides parish just to see if anyone calls him out for it.

I’m amazed more people don’t see it as rent paid to the government for the opportunity to live on their land.
That’s exactly what it is too. You don’t own anything anymore you rent from the government. One of the pillars of our once great country was the ability to own your own land. Try not paying property taxes and see who owns it

No thanks - not clicking on that. There’s enough frustration in BR already without adding to the list.

It sure happened to me, how can I get in this racket and lower my property taxes?

In 1998 a constitutional amendment was passed that allows the assessed value on a home owned and occupied by a person 65 years of age or older and who meets certain income requirements to receive a "freeze" in the assessed value of their home. This "freeze" became effective January 1, 2000.
There are a few others that fall in this category. Every few years the state legislature finds a group that they can offer to freeze their assessments. I think there is one for Police and firefighters now. Also, disabled residents can also qualify. They have a list of qualifying factors that can start a freeze.

The FREEZE makes everyone else pay more over the long term.

When you buy a new house, your new assessment is the price you paid. Look up some of the wealthiest and powerful families in Baton Rouge and look at their assessment. It is very interesting, some are fair, a lot are like this property
Louisiana is a non-disclosure state. I never show my actual purchase prices on Act of Sales. Assessor's can get fricked

Assessor value and home price/value are not the same thing.
This. You don’t go to the tax assessor’s office here in MS to get an idea of what to offer for a piece of property. You would be laughed out of sight.
However… in a non income tax state.. you can bet that value is a lot closer to where is should be.

Imagine spending 8 mil to live in Baton Rouge
