How many protestors have been killed by people driving through them? The baboons simply highlight similar behaviour, and the the key is you don't stop. You keep going. They will move out the way.
If you stop it emboldens them and they get more destructive. The only thing baboons, (and this current crop of protestors) understand is strength.
They prey on weakness.

Because the road is a place where tons of fast moving hunks of metal and glass are hurtling down at high rates of speed.

I don't care if they were protesting for me to have an entire year off with pay.

There's no argument here. Get out of the road or show me a permit that says I'm not allowed to drive on a city street that I pay taxes for. If there's a cop out there blocking the road or monitoring the situation, maybe I won't because they probably got permission. But if it's a bunch of morons holding up signs and screaming, I'm not taking it seriously.
If you have nothing to show me or you start taunting me, I'm not hesitating to start moving on with my day and drive through you if I have to. And if you touch my vehicle, I'm putting the pedal to the medal to protect myself and whoever else might be in my vehicle.

Letting them get away with these shenanigans emboldens them. They need to fear a little. I'm not advocating running them over and peeling out on their frail little hipster bodies, but I am not advocating stopping. Keep moving and they'll get out of the way. They'll flee once they see their stupidity has painful consequences.
