What's your definition of failure? If you can support your kids, fish and hunt all you want, and are happy, who the frick are you to judge if they're a failure? Success being tied with money is simply bullshite for the most part. Courtney Love may be rich, but I'd classify her as a failure in every other barometric you possibly can measure in life.

If you have no bills, and no responsibilities, then good on you for working.

I was about to bust your arse for ignoring stay-at-home parents who work and don't get paid, volunteers for charity, etc. But then you added this clarification:
It happens that my very first job was flipping Quarter Pounders and I ran into quite a few people in their thirties working full time at minimum wage doing exactly the same crap I was doing at 16. Yes, I'd call that a failure and in fact it helped convince me to get better grades so that wouldn't be my fate.

No.
But if you are an adult and you’re NOT working, you are definitely a failure.
Nothing gets me angrier than idiots poking fun at people in their 30’s-40’s-50’s who work at grocery stores, fast food, etc. At least those people are WORKING. The real failures are at home cashing government checks, living off their parents, or spouse.

If you judge a person as a failure based solely on the job they have or the amount of money they make, your parents failed at producing a decent adult human being.
