Would the elk have been less likely to keep at it if the guy had managed to keep his head upright instead of lowering it? I know that’s a natural defensive posture, but it seems to me it eggs the elk on.

I have not ever been instructed on how to deal with a young bull elk. Fortunately the fella managed to exit safely.

Right. Car should have pulled forward to him. At least to try and drive the animal an offer the guy to get inside.
