Shouldn't they be required to flag their ships in the US?

Thousands of US employees work for these companies. The reason they register the ships in other countries is so when out at sea they are not subject to the Jones Act. Nearly 95% of the actual employees on the ship while on a cruise are foreign workers. They should not be entitled to Jones Act laws and benefits. Every billboard lawyer in America would destroy the cruise industry if they were registered in the US.

Also, please note that almost all ocean going vessels are registered in a foreign country, all for the same reason. It’s not just the cruise lines.

Even if they did red-flag their vessels, they still wouldn't be Jones Act compliant. Jones Act requires vessels to be US flagged, US built, and US crewed. All of the foreign flagged cruise liners were also foreign built.

Thought they clearly said cruise lines were not included in the bailout.

So how about we just impose a tariff in lieu of income tax and let them fly whatever flag they want.

Our country will be bailing out everyone soon. If not, like Trump said, better be locking your doors or it will be pandemoniam like we've never seen.

Well we'd be imposing a tariff on our own citizens. I'd imagine the vast majority of cruise passengers that sail out of US ports are US citizens so any tariff costs would be passed on to the passengers.

And under current law, they can already fly whatever flag they want. They just cannot carry passengers or cargo from one US port to another US port
