If I have a dead animal rotting in my ceiling

Should I just ride it out until the smell goes away or have somebody come cut a hole in the ceiling and get it out? Smells like death in my downstairs ceiling area, and I don't think there is any other explanation, although nobody has heard any creepy crawlies in there. Couldn't be too big a critter.

Rat most likely. Give it a week. It'll go away after 3-4 days.

So just to be clear, you're asking if you should continue to let a potentially rotting animal carcass continue to decompose in your ceiling or get it out? Hmmmmm....

unless you can get to it ride it out
I had a dead mouse in the wall in one of my bathrooms last month I wasn't ripping out Sheetrock to get him
Took about 2 weeks before it was bearable in there though

We had a squirrel that fell in between the walls once. Stunk. After a couple of weeks the smell went away.

We had a rat die in our old house. Fell in the wall behind the fridge and the landlord wouldn't let us rip it out. The smell was so bad that you could smell it from outside. We spent all of our time outside for a week and a half.
Rip the sheetrock out and take the thing outside. The smell is gonna get unbearable and replacing sheetrock is easy.
I'd rather smell a rotten Katrina fridge than that. It was bad and no amount of anything hid the smell

I had this very same problem at my old office. Called around every exterminator and none removed dead animals.
I wound up paying my regular exterminator $100 to remove it off the clock.
It was well worth it.

IF you can find it...get it out as I swear that stink lasts a long, long time. psychology speaking it can last forever.

that long?
Hopefully it's a little mouse, cause if not a decent size animal will develop into maggots and the game is on.

Unless you know exactly where it is good luck. I've been in an attic looking before and it can be near impossible. You can call a pest control company and they can use an odor neutralizer to hide the smell.
