so over half the trip was coasting behind a van at 5mph and you're giving him props for riding a bike the rest of the way out in that mean old wind?

There is a long arse stretch of all uphill coming out the Mojave. I wouldn't want to pedal up it.

he's got granny gears on his old-man bike. its not like he's riding a single-speed or fixie.

eta and the advantages of having a van with doors open to draft off is greatly diminished as the grade % goes up.
