Can you reach it with anything from the fireplace? Something that will make it fall down?

Do you have young kids? Lower one down in a harness to pick it up then pull them back up. If they get stuck, there's a hole for you to be able to drop supplies down to them.
A word of caution. As they get older one day they will be strong enough to climb out on their own. Don't let them unless they have the errant drywall with them. Also, do t let them tell anyone about this plan. You might get a visit from your friendly local CPS staff. If that happens deny everything!

The broken piece is on the ground. It's just inside the fireplace well so you cannot access it.

Have a hole cut in the wall to access the Fireplace. Retrieve the broken Sheetrock - but SAVE it. Hire a drywall guy to come in and make necessary repairs, float, tape, texture...then go to the paint store and match existing paint. Paint the repaired area. When it's all said and done, she probably cost you $500-700. Now, go wrap that broken piece of sheetrock, put a bow on it and put it under your Christmas tree. At least you have her Christmas present taken care of.
