In the article, there's a link to YouTube of a Donahue episode where Lewis is being interviewed. The whole thing is rather gripping if you have the time. He cryptically explains he started the telethon for a very private and personal reason, but never told anybody what it was and didn't think it was important to.

It's not a secret that Lewis was known to have a difficult personality (to put it mildly), and it definitely bleeds through during the video. He's quite braggadocious about his ability to fundraise and attract corporate sponsors. He also interestingly refers to donations as "paying rent".

Maybe the ends justified the means, but it made me wonder what his true motivations were.

Had an uncle who would ask whether we won our last sporting event be it football or baseball, and if we won it was always “who’d y’all play? Jerry’s Kids?”
