My father is one of them, grew up in Brusly, and Baton Rouge and not even a slight accent whatsoever. Yet, his entire family, all my aunts, uncles and cousins, their accent cuts like a knife.
I don’t have one either having grown up in Georgia, but my mother has a Houston accent and both my brother and sister have Atlanta accents.

Louisiana had a wide range of accents as I recall. Them frickers down in Venice, LA were the worst. All I could make out was the cuss words. I ended up just getting my customers there to send me email.

When people find out I’m from Mississippi, 9/10 will then say “you don’t sound like you’re from Mississippi.” I’m not sure how they expect me to respond. “I’m sorry I don’t fit your mental model of some Forrest Gump-sounding redneck” is what I want to say.

I have a very southern accent. So southern in fact that people comment on it often. I’ve been told it doesn’t sound redneck or country ... more like a civil war survivor ??
