Message Posted by LSUTigers1986 97% of people have herpes anyways.
You ever have chickenpox? You had human herpesvirus 3.
It also causes shingles.
So, to say that 97% of people have had herpes is more correct than you know.

But one is very different than the other. Right?

I don't think 97% of people have genital herpes. But if you've had chicken pox, the "herpes virus" is in you.
um...no.
It doesn't matter either way, I've never had chicken pox, but this is wrong.

Yet you have genital herpes? You're probably right, I'm not a doctor.

They usually don't care about that once I say I am HIV positive. It rarely deters them. (joke)

quote:Yep. There is even a difference between the predominant viruses that cause oral and genital herpes, HHV1 and HHV2.
But one is very different than the other. Right?
There is some overlap between those though. HHV1 is predominantly oral, while HHV2 is genital, but they can cause the other.
HHV3 is chickenpox and can result in shingles.
HH4 is Epstein-Barr Virus, the virus that causes mono.
HHV5 is cytomegalovirus. It is normally asymptomatic and really becomes in issue in immune compromised states, like HIV. This virus remains latent in the body and is actually found in >90% of people worldwide.
HHV6 causes exanthum subitum, aka sixth disease. This virus is also found in nearly 100% of humans worldwide.
HHV7 is not a problem. Most people are immune.
HHV8, aka Kaposi Sarcoma-associated Herpesvirus, is a big issue in immune compromised individuals, mainly AIDS patients.
So, if you have ever had one of those, you have, or had, a herpes virus infection.

Look down, if your genitals don't have herpes then your face does.

It's a pretty high number. Like 1 in 4 have it and most of the people that have it are unaware and asymptomatic. Fun fact.
Good news is it isn't really harmful.

HSV2 (down there) skews heavily to certain demographics. Even so, 25% of population is probably understated a bit due to stigma.
HSV1 (cold sores) is almost ubiquitous however some never have symptoms. If you get it later in life the symptoms can be rather severe.
There are occasional breakouts of "mat herpes" among wrestlers where the HSV1 virus presents on the limbs or other less common places.
You can have either strain anywhere on the body but HSV1 prefers light so usually on the face/lips/nose. Doctors have a relatively high incidence of it on the fingers/nails due to touching infected areas of patients.

Having genital herpes and not telling a potential sexy partner is just plain wrong and should be a crime.
A few years ago, I was reconnecting with an old friend from high school. We were set to spend a weekend together after a few weeks of texting/sexting/talking. Then she laid the bomb on me that she has genital herpes and would understand if I didn't want to meet her. It would have been fun to see her and party for the weekend, but I couldn't take the chance.
