God, grant me the serenity to accept the things I cannot change,
The courage to change the things I can,
And the wisdom to know the difference.
I'm not a religious person, but I've always been partial to this prayer. It seems perfectly in line with what a prayer should be.

Not true.. You get what you need. God is no genie and regardless of the answer he gives, you have to be willing to hear and accept it.
Pretty sure that serious things that people asked god for (save my child from leukemia, help me escape a collapsed burning building) were things that were not "needed".

If you are actually serious, I would suggest the book "Prayer for Beginners" by Peter Kreeft. He addresses all of the witty remarks in this thread.

I always pray to win the lottery and to take the burden of working to make money off of my back. I pray that God will bless me with riches.

Thoughts are powerful things. If a person has a definite desire or purpose in life, has conviction that that desire/purpose will be fulfilled, and acts and lives in such a way as to achieve that desire, he is much more likely to do so.
Prayer - even for those who don't believe in God - can be a powerful form of auto-suggestion.

Yes, sometimes people are down to their last hope to the point that they would piss on a spark plug if it would do any good. The examples you noted above are such, and yes, just because things didn't turn out doesn't mean they were legitimate needs or cries for help. Unfortunately, even though they are sincere needs, such things frequently play out to their conclusion and leave some very disillusioned. It's not a matter of not having faith. It is a matter that shite is happening and not much can be done about it.

Sure Jesus prayed. But you think he prayed for good grades, the health of a pet, or any of the inane bullshite I see people praying for on Facebook? Besides, it was probably a little different for him to pray, considering he wasn't a regular joe.
I don't think any rational being believes that "Facebook" prayers are truly introspective and moments of peace and clarity.
Prayers given by people in their own spirit are worthwhile, and helpful, imo

I get confused between what God actually has control over and what he doesn't. I just don't really get why people think that God only allows good things to happen.

Maybe folks need to pray for clarity on what to pray for

I hear that. That's where an honest look at yourself comes into play, IMO
